On Servant Leadership

When in reflection servant leaders often think of ways to improve service to others.

Ron Johnson who led the creation and roll-out of Apple's computer retail effort faced a daunting challenge when Apple opened its first store because it was considered a niche computer maker. Johnson set about creating a totally different kind of experience to enrich the lives of customers and employees. The stores would be a place of more than selling computers, it would be a place to gather to learn and develop ongoing relationships with customers.

The opportunity to interface directly with products and staff was a new level of service. Soon customers would be so impressed by the environment they would go out and tell their friends about the wonderful experience.

That was years ago and nothing has changed. Whether your industry is big or small, there can never be a substitute for service and personal interaction. Service is about feeling good and wanting others to share the experience. When serving others we get the chance to be a hero for the moment. It also adds purpose and value to one's life. Surely we can all agree that its good to have a hero when one is needed.

It’s been said, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." I agree.
